Desert sands
An oppressive heat beats down from the sky on the private’s bare back. He has been tied up spread-eagled for half an hour but if you asked him, he would swear he has been immobilized for hours. Soon private Flores will pay a huge price for his mistake. Colonel sentenced him to immediate corporal punishment. Now all soldiers are waiting for the announcement of the number of lashes. Everyone expects a big number, especially Sergeant Sanchez and Harris who are going to deliver the whipping. Both men are known to be masters in their job but it's unusual to see them whipping a convict together. They always compete who whips harder. Now they have a unique chance to prove their skills.
Private Flores knows he has to pay for his fault.
He put at risk the whole battalion, so it’s not surprising everyone looks at
him with contempt. He is determined to take the whipping manly. Perhaps, when
others will see his bravery, they will change their minds about him and maybe
they will be willing to forgive him. The colonel approached the tied man.
Flores involuntary shivered but calmed down quickly. He decided to cover his
fear with an angry look. He stared straight ahead avoiding colonel's face.
"For causing the explosion private Flores is sentenced for the bare back
whipping. The number of lashes is..."
